Plastic Pollution

More than 430 million tons of plastic are produced globally each year, and approximately two-thirds are short-lived products that soon become waste.¹

The scale of this waste underscores the need for materials that can deliver functionality while reducing reliance on conventional plastics. UNEP specifically identifies shifting markets toward sustainable alternatives as part of the transition toward a more circular plastics economy.

For ShellCycle™, this challenge represents an opportunity to transform an abundant waste resource—eggshells—into sustainable material solutions designed to support a more circular economy.

Abundant Material &  Opportunity

In 2025, approximately 105 billion eggs were produced in the United States, demonstrating the significant scale of this agricultural resource.¹

ShellCycle™ is developing a circular approach to recover discarded eggshells and transform them into a valuable raw material for sustainable material applications.

Local Impact: Starting with Mardi Gras

New Orleans is working toward a more circular economy—one that recognizes waste as a resource and reduces the amount of material sent to landfills. As part of this vision, the City has identified several strategies for reducing waste from special events, including a proposed requirement for a percentage of Mardi Gras throws, by weight, to meet designated sustainable standards by 2027.¹

This shift creates an opportunity for locally developed alternatives to conventional plastic throws. ShellCycle™ is developing sustainable materials from locally available eggshell waste, creating the potential to support New Orleans' transition toward more circular celebrations while preserving the culture and traditions that make Mardi Gras unique.
